Humble Beginnings: From Dye Intermediates to Vertical Integration

The history of Vipul Organics Ltd goes back to 1968 when Mr. Pravinchandra Shah started dealing in naphthol, fast colour bases and dyes intermediates. The first manufacturing plant was set up in 1972 to produce dyestuff intermediaries under the name of Vipul Dye Chem.

Mr. Vipul Shah, son of Mr. Pravinchandra Shah, joined the company in 1989 after completing his Chemical Engineering. Under his guidance, the company laid a strong foundation in colour chemistry and gradually expanded to dyes, fast salts, bases, and specialty chemicals. The company also ventured into pigments.

Evolution into Vipul Organics Limited

“Today, Vipul Organics Limited focuses on forward and backward integration and has created a strong value chain. We have two, state of the art, manufacturing facilities at Palghar and Ambernath in Maharashtra and export to more than 45 countries. The product portfolio includes pigment powder, pigment dispersion, textile dyes, paper dyes, leather dyes, naphthols, fast colour bases, fast colour salts and dyes intermediates. In 1995, the company went public and listed on BSE,” Mr. Mihir Shah, Executive Director, and the third generation of the Vipul Organics family informed The Textile Magazine.

Mr. Mihir Shah joined the company in 2015 and has also been responsible for increasing the domestic presence and now 30% of its revenues come from within the country. He also opened up new categories for business such as paper, agriculture, cosmetics, etc. In 2017, the name of the company was changed to Vipul Organics Limited, to reflect the broadened product portfolio. The textile industry is a central pillar of its business and so offers a comprehensive portfolio of colour solutions for textile printing and dyeing.

Manufacturing Excellence, Integrated Capabilities& Exports

The Palghar facility has a capacity of around 1,200 metric tons per year and is focused on producing pigment intermediates, Naphthols, and fast bases, while the Ambernath unit has capacity to manufacture around 1,200 metric tons of powders and 6,000 metric tons of dispersions per annum. Here the focus is mainly on pigment powders and dispersions, with backward integration capabilities.

Exports are a cornerstone of its business at Vipul Organics and currently contribute around 70% to its revenues with exports to over 45 countries. Major markets include, the Americas, Europe, Asia, and the MiddleEast and Africa.

Commitment to Sustainability and Compliance

“Environmental responsibility is the foundation of our operations and our commitment to sustainability extends beyond product compliance. Vipul Organics is proud to be India’s first pigment manufacturer to achieve ZDHC Level 3 certification for its entire pigment and dyestuff portfolio. In addition we have the OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT, REACH Compliance and the GOTS certification is currently under process. We operate a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) plant and recycle up to 98% of effluent water and are also ISO 14001 certified. The shift towards traceable, sustainable, and safe textile value chains is no longer optional, it’s the new standard. At Vipul Organics, we are proud to be leading this transformation from the front,” Mr. Mihir Shah added.

The Differentiator

“What truly differentiates Vipul Organics is our deep integration, both backward and forward, across the value chain. Unlike many in the industry who are dependent on external vendors for critical raw materials, we manufacture several of our key intermediates in-house. This vertical integration gives us unmatched control over quality, consistency, and compliance, while enabling us to remain agile, cost-efficient, and reliable in an increasingly complex global supply environment. We offer a comprehensive range of dyes and pigments, including Reactive, Direct, Acid, Disperse, and VAT dyes, a capability few can match under a single roof,” he shared.

Future Plans

In future plans, Vipul Organics Ltd is in advanced stages of setting up a third production plant at Sayakha in Gujarat, which will have an initial capacity of 125 metric tons per month, which will be scaled to 250–300 metric tons and will mainly produce pigments, dispersions, and dyes. From a market development perspective, the company will enhance global presence by expanding into Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia and the Middle East markets.

Government Support

“I believe that the growth and global competitiveness of the sector will depend significantly on proactive and strategic support from the government. The government can make a definite change by focusing on infrastructure development for integrated chemical ecosystems; incentivizing green chemistry and sustainable manufacturing; export promotion and global brand positioning; simplifying regulations; compliance reform; and investment in R&D and future-ready talent. We call upon the government to expand funding for chemical R&D, establish dedicated innovation clusters or incubators for specialty chemicals, and introduce skilling programs aligned with the needs of modern chemical manufacturing. Partnerships between academia, industry, and government in this area will create a resilient and future-ready workforce. We firmly believe that with the right policy framework and focused public-private collaboration, India has the potential to emerge as a global leader in sustainable chemical manufacturing,” Mr Shah stated.

Industry Vision

Mr Shah further added, “The Indian textile dyes industry is entering a transformative phase, driven by sustainability, innovation, and global realignment of supply chains. We are witnessing a clear shift from volume to value, where high-performance, eco-certified, and customized solutions are replacing commodity-grade products. Indian manufacturers are stepping up with innovations in green chemistry, process optimization, and compliance with global benchmarks like ZDHC, REACH, and GOTS. India is uniquely positioned to benefit from the China+1 strategy, growing demand for transparent supply chains, and rising domestic consumption in fashion, home, and technical textiles.”
